Painkiller Overdose

Although more than three years have passed since Painkiller first shot up hard drives, this deeply unfashionable shooter series hasnt done any growing up since 2004. And thank the gods for that. Not too many developers are bothering with old-school shooters anymore, so its a real pleasure to blast through such a gleefully stupid stand-alone expansion pack like Painkiller: Overdose. All of the design attributes that made the original game as subtle as blunt-force trauma are back for more, including monsters that seem to have escaped from an Iron Maiden album cover, as well as slice-and-dice weapons that wouldnt be out of place in a torture chamber. Only some technical difficulties and the nagging sense of déjà vu interfere with the bloody good time on offer here.

If youve played the original Painkiller, you already know the score. Mindware Studios Overdose is pretty much a straight remake of People Can Flys cult hit from the summer of 2004, with the same sledgehammer mentality. Considering this expansion started life as a free mod project before it got the attention of the bigwigs at DreamCatcher Games, it shouldnt be too surprising that little new ground has been broken. Youre now playing a half-angel, half-demon named Belial in the three-chapter campaign instead of a dead guy looking for his wife, but this mystical creature tosses out wisecracks like Serious Sam. Hell, he even sounds so much like Serious Sam that you have to wonder if the developers hired the same actor to voice his lines. Regardless, there is definitely some of the sincerest form of flattery going on here. Belial constantly snorts out cheesy action-movie lines. He mutters "Tastes like chicken!" when he sucks down a soul, sings "Dum-dum-dum! Another one bites the dust!" when he wastes an enemy, and even grumbles about "sand in my crotch" when entering the Egyptian level.

All of the weapons have been replaced with new models that mirror the old ones. For instance, the crowd-pleasing stake gun, has been swapped out for a crossbow with the identical ability to staple enemies to walls. All-new ghouls have been tapped to stand in for the old ghouls, although they arent as out-there as those that populated the original Painkiller. While the zombies, various types of skeleton, robots, flaming demons, and the rest of this creepy crew look great, theyre very predictable. As soon as you get a look at the level setting, you know whats coming next.

Of course, predictability is sort of the point. As with every traditional first-person shooter dating back to Wolfenstein 3D, the game gulps down an old formula. You walk into a room, valley, or cave jazzed up with Halloween lighting effects. A door clangs shut behind you. Driving music powers up. A few dozen creepy monsters pop in with a flash of brimstone. Mayhem commences. Repeat this for a dozen hours or so. The end. The only template tweaks are holdovers from the original Painkiller. Thus, the ability to kick off a demonic freak-out by swallowing enemy souls is back, as is the tarot-card system that rewards the completion of extreme challenges (finishing a level using only a wimpy weapon, for example) with cards that can be purchased to grant the buyer kick-ass powers. Oh, theres one more change that shouldnt go unmentioned--the developers have jettisoned the spectacularly appropriate thrash-metal music for wimpy orchestral stuff and pounding techno. Somewhere out there, Beavis and Butt-Head are not amused.

All that truly separates Overdose from other old-time shooters is a horror-movie groove thats equal parts Clive Barker gruesomeness and Hammer Horror cheese. As with the first game, the levels are a jumble. Youre supposed to be fighting in purgatory, which is apparently a creative code word for "maps featuring whatever the hell we think looks cool." So you get an ancient Rome burning level populated by spooky gladiators, fire elementals, and giant cyclopes; a misty Japanese village level with ninjas, kung-fu old guys with coolie hats, and murderous geishas; an asteroid space base staffed by flying robots; some sort of Egyptian desert occupied by mummies, scarab beetles, and what looks like the god Anubis flying around on a magic carpet; plus murky swampland featuring giant tentacles that erupt from the ground and squid-faced Cthulhu rip-offs. Nothing here quite approaches the twisted genius of the original game, which had electric lunatics in an insane asylum and skeletal biker dudes hanging out by the Venetian canals. Only the hopping cyclopean demon arms come close, but there arent enough of them in the game to make an impact.

At least it all looks good. While the visuals arent entirely up to contemporary standards (rest easy, Source nuts) and there are only a couple of really knockout sections in each level, the overall art design is incredible, save for the odd issue with messed-up lighting effects. The only problem is that the now-dated Pain engine isnt up to snuff. Particle effects, such as smoke and sand, cause it to chug, regularly dropping the game to single-digit frame rates. The developers have compensated for this by slowing the whole game down when this happens, so battles remain playable even when you seem to be trudging through quicksand. Still, even without any herky-jerky moments, the game drops into slo-mo far too often.

Long load times are another huge annoyance. This was a major drawback of the original Painkiller, and all the extra eye candy in Overdose seems to have made an already-bad problem much worse. Loading even quick saves takes at least a full minute, which really gums up the works in such a pure arcade shooter that is all about running and gunning. You can also get killed pretty regularly here, so you can easily waste three or four minutes out of every 10 spent playing the game just sitting back and twiddling your thumbs in front of a loading screen. This can be very irritating, but at least it makes you extra desperate to avoid getting smoked.

It seems like a lot of people are desperate to avoid the multiplayer modes of play. Online battles were never a strength of the original Painkiller, and they arent a strong point here either, given the fact that nobody seems to be playing the game over the Internet. Maps have once more been made pretty tiny to compensate for the game engines poor handling of large, open areas. This makes it poorly suited for multiplayer mayhem because matches with more than four players turn into a chaotic affair where youre constantly running into each other. Matches get tiresome quickly because everything seems so random that theres little rhyme or reason to anything you do.

You might actually feel brain cells dying while playing Painkiller: Overdose, but even so, its hard to quibble with such pure, dumb fun. Even though long loads can cause more angst than the multitudes of monsters trying to disembowel you, this old-fashioned shooter is a welcome respite from the scripted, story-driven epics littering the FPS landscape these days (and a pleasant reminder of the simple joy of shooting fiendish creeps in the face).

CAR reader spies new 2011 Land Rover Freelander facelift

(Reviews Car BLog) CAR reader James MacDonald spotted the facelifted Land Rover Freelander recently – parked in the car park at a service station on the M42 not far from the company’s Gaydon HQ.
CAR reader turns paparazzo

‘I papped this Land Rover on Saturday night at a services on the M42,’ says James. ‘It was parked right at the back of the car park, with a chap in the driving seat. Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to stop long enough to get a shot from the front, but it too was cloaked like the rear.

I drove round the car park to get to the exit, and spotted the Landy in the back corner. Noticing the cloaking, I decided to take a slight detour from my route and pulled up behind it. Thankfully I had the camera with me on the back seat, so grabbed it and took a couple of snaps. Had the driver not been in the car, I probably would have braved taking some photos from the front.

It was exciting to see it parked up, and in my haste to take photos, I managed to block up most of the car park, drawing ever more attention to the poor chap in the Freelander clearly trying to shrink into his seat!

Last time we showed you spy pictures of the Land Rover Freelander, the company was busy preparing the Evoque (né LRX) ahead of its launch. Now the Evoque is done and dusted, Land Rover is able to concentrate on facelifting the Freelander before its launch in autumn 2010.
So what’s new on the facelifted Freelander?

A series of cosmetic and hardware changes will keep the Freelander up to date. Inevitably in this carbon-crunched age, many of the updates will focus on engines producing less C02 and more mpg. A new Ford-PSA derived 2.2-litre four-cylinder diesel is one of the main technical upgrades.

Cosmetic changes will keep it in line with the other Land Rover family cars, though the 2011 Freelander won’t have the split tailgate like the Range Rover. It sticks with the conventional hatchback.
That looks good! Where and when can I see it in the metal?

The facelifted Freelander will be launched at the 2010 Moscow motor show. If Moscow is too far away for you, expect to see it at Paris with the car going on sale in early 2011.

Acer Aspire One

by Joanna Stern on July 17, 2008
Mini-notebooks are getting bigger and more elaborate by the day, but Acer enters the crowded market with a simple yet solid miniature laptop for only $379. The Aspire one sports a classic look and its Intel Atom processor gives it a decent amount of power for surfing the Web and light multimedia use. Taking a cue from ASUS’ well-received custom Linux interface, Acer packages the system with a lightweight, customized Linpus Lite Linux operating system. We just wish this netbook lasted longer on a charge.

Sleek, Small Design

The pearl white Aspire one (also available in navy blue, pink, and black) looks far from cheap. Similar to the ASUS Eee PC 901, the Aspire one’s white lid sports a glossy finish that is resistant to fingerprint smudges. Though it’s a small design addition, the neon orange plated hinge adds a little pizzazz to the overall look.

Compared with other 8.9-inch systems, such as the Eee PC 901 ($599) and HP 2133 Mini-Note PC ($729), the Aspire one is both slimmer and lighter. Measuring 9.8 x 6.7 x 1.1 inches and weighing just 2.2 pounds—4 ounces lighter than the Eee PC 901—the Aspire one’s portability alone makes it compelling. With its included pleather sleeve, the system was perfect for tossing into a shoulder bag or slim briefcase. It’s only 3 pounds with the AC adapter.
Decent Typing Experience, Cramped Touchpad

The keyboard, 89 percent of full size, is a shade smaller than those on the HP Mini-Note and the MSI Wind, but it is big enough for comfortable touch typing. It’s certainly bigger and more firm than that of the ASUS Eee PC 900/901; it had no bend or flex to it. The keys were quite responsive and offered nice tactile feedback.

Measuring 2.5 x 1.2 inches, the trackpad on the Aspire one is disappointingly small and vertically very narrow. The result is a lot of back-tracking. Similar to the trackpad on the HP Mini-Note, it is vertically straddled with the right and left mouse buttons, forcing us to use both hands to access the buttons.

The Aspire one is well equipped with ports; VGA, three USB, Ethernet, headphone, and microphone jacks surround the system. Acer includes both a 5-in-1 card reader (for transferring photos, music, and other files) and an additional SD Card slot so you can expand the measly 8GB of storage capacity on the system.

Here are new sets of reseters shared to us by another member "e2500e". Many thanks to you guys who are very supportive and generous in our group.

We were able to test the C110 reseter with an actual printer and its working. All others were not tested with an actual printer but the good news is, the program itself is working even without the printer unlike other copies that are circulating in the net in which we are stuck in particular mode.

Good luck to everyone who needs these reseters. Please give your feedback through indoreset mailing list.

The Incredible Hulk

Marvel Entertainment seemingly cant go wrong. Theyve published hugely successful comic book franchises (The X-Men, The Fantastic Four, Spider-Man, countless others) and have had tremendous success with movie adaptations of those comic books (Iron Man has grossed over $311 million so far, according to Rotten Tomatoes).  Sadly, things go downhill quickly once you enter the world of video game adaptations.

There are a few words most gamers hate to hear when it comes to video games: "movie tie-in" is one; "console port" is another.  With Segas The Incredible Hulk for PC, gamers get the worst of both worlds: a bad movie tie-in and a horrible console port.

On the heels of the recently released Iron Man video game (Metacritic average score of 44 out of 100), The Incredible Hulk is wreaking havoc on the PC, but not in a good way.

The games plot vaguely ties in with the film, with some moments of the film recreated, but the majority of the game is sandbox style, with the player in Manhattan, free to roam about the city as the Hulk, scaring pedestrians, smashing taxi cabs, or taking missions.

The Incredible Hulk features voice acting by the stars of the film: Edward Norton as Bruce Banner, Liv Tyler as Betty Ross, William Hurt as General Ross, and Tim Roth as Emil Blonsky.  This is perhaps the one good thing about this game.

First off, lets get this out of the way: the graphics are horrible.  Ugly.  This seems to be a port of the PS2 version.  The Hulk himself is the only element nicely textured and animated.  Everything else is plain.  The PC port of Spider-Man: The Game from 2002 did a better job of presenting a believable Manhattan.  This Manhattan is sparsely populated (and you see the same NPC characters all over the place) with some vehicles driving around the streets.  Yes, there are lots of buildings but they are just sort of there.  Couldnt we have gotten some reflective window textures on those buildings? It would have been nice to see sunlight reflected off of those windows.

There are no adjustments to be made for the games graphics; the only thing you can change is the games resolution.  This is a game that has not heard of such things as HDR lighting and normal mapping.  Believe me, this is not the game to show off on your killer gaming rig.  Id go as far as to say 2003s video game tie-in of Ang Lees The Hulk is a better looking game, and thats a game using an engine thats over five years old.

You can control the Hulk with a mouse and keyboard, but the best option is a game controller (I used the Xbox 360 wireless controller for Windows), this being a console port and all.

Most missions seem to revolve around the Hulk battling various armies, while tossing in video game standards like escort missions, protect a Person of Importance, etc.  It all gets a bit repetitive after a few minutes.

As you progress you unlock power upgrades, attack combos, and the like.

Most of the environment is destructible, but even thats not much of an incentive to play.  There really is nothing here to enjoy.  Skip this game and see the movie instead.  Better yet, hunt up Amazon or Ebay for a used copy of 2003s The Hulk.

How Embarassing

Gamespot have stuck up the Star Wars: Forces Unleashed. As I personally, predicted, the 360 version got an average score (7.5) However, the Wii version got a disappointing 6.

Yes, I know it was naive of me to hope, but I really thought this was going to be the game that showed everyone how to make an awesome Wii game. However, they messed it up, like everyone else.

I might try and rent the 360 version at some point, as the story looks quite interesting and chucking stuff was quite fun in the demo. But this is me disappointed.

Dead Island Game Of The Year Edition

Description
If you’ve been dreaming about paradise, we know a place where you can make those dreams come true–the Island of Banoi. Just off the coast of Papua New Guinea, located south of the Equator and just north of Australia. Until very recently much of the island was wild and primitive and totally untouched by the modern world. Even though the capital, Moresby, was founded by Australian settlers in 1895, many places deep in the interior still have never been seen by western eyes. As a guest of the Royal Palms Resort, the player’s stay was supposed to be a dream holiday; a luxurious getaway to the beautiful beaches of a tropical paradise. But faced with the reality of a zombie apocalypse, there is only one thing left to do: Survive.

Game Of The Yeat Edition Includes:
Dead Island game
Bloodbath Arena
Ryder White
The Ripper (Weapon Blueprint)
This is Dead Island… a paradise to die for…

Terror. Violence. Madness. Bedlam. A holiday paradise gone mad. A tropical island turns into total chaos after a mysterious zombie outbreak. Cut off from the rest of the world, the player’s only chance to survive is to fight to the death and find a way to escape from the island. Dead Island combines first-person action with a heavy focus on melee combat, character development and customization of a vast array of weapons. All of these gameplay features are presented in a dark story inspired by classic zombie movies with a gritty and engrossing campaign that can be played with up to 4 players in co-op mode.

Set in an open world tropical island, hordes of different festering zombies await players around every corner while they embark on a variety of thrilling missions through the holiday resort. With firearms and ammunition being scarce the player must rely on utilising found items as weapons for self-defence and fight off zombie hordes in intense melee combat. A diverse range of items can be collected and will later serve to transform the player’s ordinary makeshift weapons into serious instruments of destruction. In addition to satisfying even the most bloodthirsty action fan’s fantasy, Dead Island also features role-playing elements which allow the player to develop one of the game’s unique character classes according to their preferences, all the while learning new skills and fresh tactics during their journey through the perilous environments of the island. What’s more, anytime during a game up to four players can seamlessly join together and experience the intense combat and immersive story with cooperative gameplay.

With the all-new Chrome Engine 5 powering Dead Island, the game will use the latest installment of Techland’s acclaimed proprietary game engine, allowing the player to experience the tropical island paradise in graphical splendour with diverse environments like lush forests and detailed city environments.

YS The Oath in Felghana

YS: The Oath in Felghana
These days I had the chance to play one awesome Japanese game – YS.
The YS series are several RPG games but here I’ll talk only for YS: The Oath in Felghana. I have no background information about the series, so if you are an old YS fan, don’t shoot at me, those are my first impressions only.
The series are centered at the adventures of Adol, our main hero. As every hero, he is cool, his favorite breakfast is fried monsters and of course he has to save the world and the young lady. Yep, there is a beautiful, blondie young lady to be saved.

YS: The Oath in Felghana
Gameplay
The game controls are smooth and after some time I actually forgot that the real world is outside the screen. The game world is beautiful but deadly so the players don’t have much time to relax. The average monsters are somewhat easy to be beaten but there are strong boss monsters. During his journey, Adol finds some hidden treasures – powerful artifacts that help him in some tough situations. For example the first boss is unpassable without the Firedragon Amulet. Some places on the map a too high and you can’t reach them unless you use the wind bracelet.

The Story
The game starts with short story as Adol and his friend arrived at Felghana. The game follows the story closely with series of quests that reveal the characters background and motivation. The plot is interesting even without the action but together they form an awesome adventure.

MMORPG
As I heard there is an MMORPG YS Online, currently in Open Beta. I’ll try to learn more and I’ll make a separate post about it. I hope it is as good as the series, I can’t wait to play it!

Purity Brickwarrior Polybag Review

For a while Ive wanted to do a review of Brickarms and Brickforge parts.  Ive got a fair amount of them stashed away in small tackleboxes.  I think I even use a few of them in builds.  I saw this review of the Brick Warriors Warrior Pack though and decided to go looking for them and do my own review.

Heres the package.  I picked them up for $2.99 at Five Below.  Each package comes with a code for 6 free items as part of an online order.  One thing I didnt take a picture of is that these all have a transparent section on the back so that you can see what you are purchasing.

Here are the parts from the first set I purchased.

The parts from the second set.

As you can see, theyre a little small for 7P scale.  They almost look like toys in the Chubs hands.

The shield is more like a buckler when held by the Chub.  The sword is closer to a combat knife in size at this scale.  It looks good though.

They look a bit better when wielded by the Classic.

The sword actually looks like its sword sized at this scale.

The Questions:
Can you build a frame, or frames, right away?  No.  (-5)
Is it below, at, or above the golden ratio?  Above.  (-10)
If you cant build a frame right away, does it have parts you should be able to put into use right away?  Yes.  (+5)
Does it have more than a handful of immediately useful parts?  No. (-5)
Score: -15 (C). Harsh, but true.  The most these packs are going to provide is a few accent pieces for your frames.

Speech Commands in IVR Telephone Systems

interactive voice response speech commands In the most recent version of IVM interactive voice response software, v5.03 added a new speech recognition feature that allows the automated system to accept speech commands in addition to key presses as responses. This gives callers added flexibility when navigating an IVR system.

IVM is a powerful interactive phone system perfect for a variety of tasks from setting up an information hotline to a voicemail system or automated attendant. We hope that users will find this new option a convenient feature in designing useful and user-friendly call flow patterns for their interactive telephone systems.

How Nerdy Is Your Boss

A Christmas gift from my boss: the Pocket Monkey.  She knows what to get her engineers!

Like all hopelessly nerdy sorts, I love having tools with me.  I dont know what happened to my Swiss Army knife; it seems to have disappeared a month or two back, so it is nice to have something so small it fits into my wallet -- and yet gives me a bottle opener, flat screwdriver, earbuds cord wrap (no, I dont need that, really), microscrewdriver, hex wrench, orange peeler, ruler (inches on one side, metric on the other), letter opener, Philips screwdriver, and straight edge.

Cassava bread to generate over N240bn for farmers

The Minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, Dr. Akinwunmi Adesina, has said that the inclusion of cassava flour into bread processing in the country will generate about N240 billion for local farmers annually.

He stated this while delivering a keynote address at the Centre for Value and Leadership lecture held in Lagos.

He said, “The cassava bread is not just bread, it’s also about economics.

This bread alone will put N240billion in the hands of all those small holder farmers and our local processors that we have all across this country. So we must patronize this bread if we truly believe that charity begins at home. As far as I am concerned, if bread is not produced and processed in Nigeria, eaten by Nigerians, it is not good enough for Nigeria.”

He explained that the ministry is also revamping exports where Nigerian youths will have global dominance in agricultural commodity markets.

He further explained that the agricultural sector is getting all the support it needs to ensure that it truly begins to drive the economy, even as a foreign exchange earner.

He said, “The Afrexim Bank has supported our cassava export to China because we have a contract with China for 2.2million metric tons of dried cassava as export. Afrexim Bank has given Nigeria $40million to support our small holder farmers and chip processors to be able to process all that chips and take it to China and that alone will give our farmers about $802million if we are able to meet that contract. That’s what agriculture as a business does. It lifts people out of poverty by creating wealth of opportunities.”

He said that the ministry has been able to secure loans from the banks to the sector to the tune of N25 billion in 2013 from a paltry N3.5 billion in 2011.

“The banks recorded zero per cent on all the loan facilities that they made available to farmers for the past two years. This is where the money is going to be made and I think that the banks are stepping up to that,” he said.

He further explained that, “To reverse the lack of food manufacturing companies in our rural areas, we launched what we called staple crop processing zones. These zones are areas of high food production.

Visual Studio 2010 vs Visual Studio 2012

Visual Studio 2010 vs. Visual Studio 2012

I purchased Visual Studio 2010 Professional earlier this year on Amazon. Is the cheapest compare to other editions? Visual Studio helps me do many applications under Windows 32 and 64 bits.  You have VB.NET, .NET C#, C++, F# and you have integrated tools for database, web, a basic setup deployment and other stuff. Honestly, I don’t use them all because I also work with other language such as Eclipse for Java, CAD software….

I look at Visual Studio 2012. Well is pretty, but to be honest, unless you need to produce program especially for Windows 8, I won’t think is worth buying Visual Studio 2012. It is not a bad product.

Visual Studio 2010 is not discontinued yet and still works fine, but the new Visual Studio 2012 is a little bit cheaper. SO if you need to buy a Visual Studio, I’ll suggestion you to shop around and get the new Visual Studio 2012, not the Visual Studio 2010.

Yes, I still use the older version Visual Studio 2010, but I am not enough interested to it now. That new version is officially released for purchase on middle September 2012.

While we are speaking, the older professional version is at 575$ and the newer professional version is at 471.99$. That is 80% the price of the older version. That is bases on Amazon where I bought my own Visual Studio Professional Edition 2010 (with box).
Is the same for the 2012 with MSDN version is 1097.53$ while the other one is at 1189.35$ (professional)
You could always download the free editions and try them before buying. Here are the links:

Chillies – a new Indian restaurant in Barrhaven – highly recommended …

So Jon and I tried a new restaurant this evening in Barrhaven. It is called Chillies, although there may be more to the name than that. It is located in the Sobey’s strip mall on Greenbank north of Strandherd. The restaurant is near the Quiznos restaurant, about half way down from the grocery store.

This was only their 3rd day open and there was definitely some traffic, not bad for a Monday in a new restaurant. They do take out, but the sit in service is very good and the décor is nice. A kind of modern feel with separators between most tables for a small level or privacy.

I forgot to bring a camera (we did not start out going here, but Jon remembered it at the last minute and we changed direction) so I had to shoot what little I could on the Galaxy S3. It did an adequate job, though, as the décor comes out quite clearly.

I started with a Mango Lasse, which I try in every restaurant. Theirs is quite nice, although the more milk-shake like thickness and stronger flavour at Haveli’s still has that one as the top Lasse for my taste. Still, I drank every drop so it was perfectly tasty.

2013-08-19 18.06.48

What really shone, though, was the food. We did not get creative, wanting instead to try two dishes we’ve had in many places to get a good comparison. We had Vindaloo Beef and Butter Chicken. We also asked for two Naan bread and of course the complementary Basmati Rice.

Well, we were blown away.

The Vindaloo is an off menu item, but as soon as we mentioned it he said that they could do it. And I am very glad they did. Thick and rich with a generous portion and a fair bit of “kick” … just how we like it. We like it better than our other local favourite – Karara. The Butter chicken was also a treat, although Jon is not a fan in general. I have always liked butter chicken so long as it was not overwhelmed by cream (as it is sometimes at The Clay Oven in Winnipeg.)

It was tough to get through it all, but we soldiered through Smile

I have to give this place a very high recommendation. Great food, prices are good, service is very good. Unfortunately, I cannot find an online reference so if you did not receive a flyer in your mail box (I don’t recall getting one) then you might just have to drive there to try it. It will be worth it …
